Percy Julian

Percy Julian was an American research chemist. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1899. He found ways to make important medicines from soybeans. His work helped millions of people with conditions like arthritis and glaucoma.

Early Life

Julian grew up in Alabama during a time of extreme segregation. His grandfather had been enslaved. He had to attend a special school because Black students could not go to the local high school. Despite these barriers, he earned a chemistry degree from DePauw University as the class valedictorian.

Scientific Breakthroughs

Julian figured out how to create synthetic cortisone from soybeans, making the medicine affordable for everyone. Before his work, cortisone was extremely expensive. He also created treatments for glaucoma. He became one of the first African Americans to head a major research lab.

Fun Facts

  • Percy Julian created over 100 patents for his chemical discoveries.
  • His synthetic cortisone helped make arthritis treatment affordable for millions.
  • He was the first African American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences.
