Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church. He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936. He became Pope in 2013. He is the first Pope from South America and is known for his simple lifestyle and care for the poor.
Early Life
Bergoglio grew up in a family of Italian immigrants in Argentina. He worked as a chemical technician before deciding to become a priest. He studied theology and became a Jesuit priest. He rose through the church to become Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Becoming Pope
In 2013, he was elected Pope and chose the name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi, who cared for the poor. He was the first Jesuit to become Pope. He has spoken out about climate change, poverty, and peace. He is loved for his warmth and humility.
