Cisneros grew up in a large Mexican American family in Chicago. She moved often and attended many different schools. She was shy as a child and found comfort in reading and writing. She studied English at Loyola University and later earned a master's degree in creative writing.

The House on Mango Street was published in 1984 and is now read in schools across America. The book tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago. Cisneros writes about identity, family, and belonging. She was the first Mexican American woman to have a major publisher release her work.
