Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein was an American poet, songwriter, and cartoonist. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1930. He is best known for his poetry books and The Giving Tree. His silly poems have made children laugh for over 50 years.

Early Life

Silverstein started drawing and writing as a young boy. He said that since he could not play ball well or talk to girls, he had time to draw and write. He served in the military and later became a cartoonist for Playboy magazine. He did not start writing for children until he was in his 30s.

Famous Works

The Giving Tree, published in 1964, is a touching story about a tree and a boy. Where the Sidewalk Ends is a collection of funny and imaginative poems. A Light in the Attic spent over two years on the bestseller list. His poems are known for their humor, drawings, and surprise endings.
