Tawakkol Karman is a Yemeni journalist and human rights activist. She was born in Taiz, Yemen, in 1979. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for her nonviolent fight for women's rights and democracy. She was the first Arab woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Early Life
Karman grew up in Yemen and studied political science. She became a journalist and started a group called Women Journalists Without Chains. She organized protests demanding freedom of the press and women's rights. She was often threatened and arrested for her activism.
Nobel Peace Prize
Karman played a key role in the Arab Spring protests in Yemen in 2011. She organized peaceful demonstrations calling for democracy and human rights. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at age 32. She was the youngest Nobel Peace laureate at the time and the first Arab woman to receive the honor.
