Wanda Diaz-Merced

Wanda Diaz-Merced is a Puerto Rican astronomer. She was born in Gurabo, Puerto Rico, in 1982. She lost her sight while studying astrophysics. She invented a way to turn starlight data into sound so she could continue studying the universe.

Early Life

Diaz-Merced loved looking at the stars as a child in Puerto Rico. She studied physics in college and planned to study the sky. During her studies, she gradually lost her vision. Instead of giving up, she found a new way to do her research.

Sonification

Diaz-Merced pioneered a technique called sonification, which turns data from stars into sound. This allowed her to detect patterns in starlight that even sighted scientists had missed. She earned her PhD from the University of Glasgow. She now teaches other scientists how to use sound to explore space.

Fun Facts

  • Wanda Diaz-Merced can hear differences in star data that sighted scientists sometimes miss.
  • Her technique is called sonification, which means turning data into sound.
  • She earned a PhD in physics from the University of Glasgow in Scotland.

Did You Know?

Wanda Diaz-Merced's work has shown that turning data into sound can actually reveal patterns that are invisible on graphs. Her method is now used by scientists around the world.
