Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet cosmonaut who made history. He was born in Klushino, Russia, in 1934. On April 12, 1961, he became the first person to travel to outer space. His flight lasted 108 minutes and orbited the Earth once.
Early Life
Gagarin grew up in a small village in Russia. His family lived through the hardships of World War II. He became interested in flying as a teenager. He joined the Soviet Air Force and was chosen for the space program.
Big Achievements
Gagarin launched into space aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. He orbited Earth once at a height of about 200 miles. He came back safely by parachuting out of his capsule. He became a worldwide hero and traveled to many countries.

- Gagarin was chosen partly because he was short, at 5 feet 2 inches, which helped him fit in the tiny spacecraft.
