Dog Breeds
There are over 340 different dog breeds in the world. Dog breeds come in all sizes, from tiny toy breeds to giant working dogs. Each breed was created for a specific purpose, like herding, hunting, or being a companion. That is why different breeds look and act so differently.
Popular Dog Breeds
Labrador Retrievers have been America's most popular dog for many years. Golden Retrievers are known for being friendly and great with families. German Shepherds are smart and often work as police dogs. Bulldogs are calm and make great apartment dogs. Poodles come in three sizes and are one of the smartest breeds.
How Breeds Were Created
People created dog breeds by choosing dogs with certain traits and having them breed together. Over many generations, these traits became stronger. Herding breeds like Border Collies are great at controlling sheep. Hound breeds like Beagles have an amazing sense of smell for tracking.
