Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is when computers can do things that usually require human intelligence. AI can recognize faces in photos, understand what you say, and even beat the best players at chess and Go. AI is already in your life. It helps your phone understand your voice and suggests videos you might like to watch.
How AI Learns
AI learns from data, which is information. The more data it gets, the better it becomes. Machine learning is when a computer looks at thousands of examples and finds patterns. To recognize cats, an AI might look at millions of cat pictures until it learns what makes a cat a cat. This is similar to how you learned to recognize things as a baby.
AI in Everyday Life
AI is in many things you use every day. Voice assistants like Siri use AI to understand your words. Spelling and grammar checkers use AI. Video games use AI to make characters act smart. Self-driving cars use AI to see the road and make decisions. AI even helps doctors spot diseases in medical images.
Fun Facts
- In 1997, a computer called Deep Blue beat the world chess champion for the first time.
- AI can write stories, create artwork, and compose music.
- The AI in your email can sort spam from real messages with over 99 percent accuracy.
Did You Know?
AI can now create pictures from just a written description. You can type a sentence like a cat wearing a space suit on the moon and the AI will generate a brand new picture that has never existed before. These AI image generators have learned from millions of images to understand what things look like!
