Conductors and Insulators

Some materials let electricity move through them easily. These are called conductors. Other materials stop electricity from flowing. These are called insulators. Knowing which is which keeps us safe and helps electricity do its job.

What Are Conductors

Conductors are materials that electricity flows through well. Most metals, like copper, silver, and gold, are great conductors. That is why wires inside your home are made of metal. Water with salt in it can also carry electricity. Your body is a weak conductor too, so you must be careful near electricity.

What Are Insulators

Insulators do not let electricity move through them easily. Rubber, plastic, glass, and wood are good insulators. That is why wires are often covered in plastic or rubber. The cover keeps the electricity inside the wire where it belongs. This helps keep you safe from shocks.

Fun Facts

  • Silver is the best metal conductor of electricity.
  • Pure water is actually a poor conductor of electricity.
  • Birds can sit on power lines safely because they are not touching the ground.

Did You Know?

Copper is used for most wires because it conducts electricity very well and costs less than silver.
