Potential Energy

Potential energy is energy that is waiting to be used. A ball at the top of a hill has potential energy because it can roll down. A stretched rubber band also has potential energy. When the object moves, this stored energy turns into motion.

Stored Energy

Potential energy is energy that is saved up inside an object. It is not moving yet, but it can move soon. A book on a high shelf has potential energy from gravity. If it falls, the energy changes into motion. The higher the object, the more potential energy it has.

Types of Potential Energy

There are different kinds of potential energy. Gravity gives objects energy when they are high up. Springs and rubber bands store energy when they are stretched or squeezed. Food and batteries hold chemical potential energy. Even a bow and arrow uses stored energy to fly.

Fun Facts

  • A roller coaster car has the most potential energy at the top of the biggest hill.
  • Water behind a dam has lots of potential energy that can make electricity.
  • A wound-up toy has potential energy in its spring.

Did You Know?

The word 'potential' means something that could happen. That is why stored energy is called potential energy.
