Torque
Torque
Torque is a special kind of force. Instead of pushing something in a straight line, it makes things turn. When you open a door, you use torque on the handle. Torque is found in many machines and tools.
How Torque Works
Torque depends on how hard you push and how far from the center you push. A long wrench gives more torque than a short one. That is why a long handle makes jobs easier. Pushing a door far from its hinges takes less effort. Pushing near the hinges is much harder.
Torque in Machines
Car engines make torque to turn the wheels. Bikes use torque when you press the pedals. Even a screwdriver uses torque to turn a screw. Bigger trucks need more torque to carry heavy loads. Electric motors also create torque to spin fans and toys.
Fun Facts
- The word torque comes from a Latin word meaning 'to twist.'
- A ballerina spinning uses her arms to control her torque.
- Torque wrenches help workers tighten bolts the right amount.
Did You Know?
Race car engines can make huge amounts of torque, which is why they can zoom so fast from a stop.
