Black Holes

A black hole is a strange place in space. Its gravity is so strong that nothing can escape it, not even light. That is why it looks black. Black holes can form when a very big star dies. They come in many sizes.

How Black Holes Form

When a huge star runs out of fuel, it can fall in on itself. This squeezes all its matter into a tiny spot. The pull of gravity becomes super strong. That is how a black hole is made.

Types of Black Holes

Some black holes are small, only a few times bigger than our Sun. Others are giant and sit at the centers of galaxies. These are called supermassive black holes. Our own galaxy has a giant black hole in the middle.

Fun Facts

  • You cannot see a black hole directly, only its effects.
  • Scientists took the first picture of a black hole in 2019.
  • Time actually slows down near a black hole.
