Dark Matter

Dark matter is one of the biggest mysteries in space. We cannot see it or touch it. But scientists know it is there. It has gravity that pulls on stars and galaxies. There is much more dark matter than regular matter in the universe.

How We Know It Exists

Galaxies spin very fast. If only normal matter was in them, they would fly apart. Something else must be holding them together. Scientists think this is dark matter. Its gravity keeps galaxies in shape.

What Could It Be?

No one knows yet what dark matter is made of. Some scientists think it is a new kind of tiny particle. Others have different ideas. Big labs around the world are trying to find it.

Fun Facts

  • Dark matter makes up about a quarter of the universe.
  • Regular matter, like stars and people, is only a small piece.
  • Dark matter does not give off any light.

Did You Know?

Dark matter is different from dark energy, which is another mystery pushing the universe apart!
