Laika the Space Dog
Laika the Space Dog
Laika was a small stray dog found on the streets of Moscow, Russia. In 1957, she became the first animal to orbit Earth aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2. Her flight proved that a living creature could survive the launch into orbit. Laika became one of the most famous animals in history.
Laika's Mission
The Soviet Union chose Laika because she was calm and small. Scientists trained her to sit in a tiny space and eat special food. On November 3, 1957, Laika launched into space. Her spacecraft was not designed to come back to Earth. Sadly, Laika did not survive the mission, but she paved the way for human spaceflight.
Laika's Legacy
Laika's flight made headlines around the world. Many people were sad about what happened to her. Her mission led to better treatment of animals in space programs. Laika has been honored with statues and stamps. She is remembered as a brave pioneer who helped open the door to human space travel.
