The Very Large Telescope

The Very Large Telescope is one of the best telescopes in the world. It is made up of four big telescopes working together. They sit on a mountain in Chile called Cerro Paranal. The telescopes take amazing pictures of space.

Four in One

The Very Large Telescope is often called the VLT for short. It has four main telescopes, each with a mirror over 27 feet wide. The four telescopes can team up to act like one giant telescope. That lets them see very tiny details of faraway stars. Smaller helper telescopes also join in.

What It Has Found

The VLT has found many cool things in space. It took the first picture ever of a planet outside our solar system. It also helped study a huge black hole in the middle of our galaxy. The VLT sits high in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth. The dry, clear air is perfect for seeing the stars.

Fun Facts

  • The VLT is run by an organization called the European Southern Observatory.
  • Each telescope is named after a star in a local language.
  • The VLT began working in 1998.
