Canoeing

Canoeing is a fun water sport where you ride in a small, narrow boat called a canoe. You use a paddle to move through the water. People canoe on calm lakes, winding rivers, and even fast-moving rapids.

How to Canoe

A canoe is an open boat that you sit or kneel in. You use a single-bladed paddle to move through the water. You dip the paddle in on one side, pull it back, and switch sides to go straight.

Canoes can hold one, two, or even three people. The person in the back steers. Canoeing is peaceful on calm water but can be very exciting on rapids and rivers with fast currents.

Canoeing as a Sport

Canoeing has been an Olympic sport since 1936. There are two types of racing: sprint and slalom. Sprint races are on flat water, and paddlers go as fast as they can in a straight line. Slalom races are on whitewater rapids, and paddlers weave between gates.

Canoes have been used for thousands of years. Native Americans and other indigenous people used them for travel and fishing. Today, canoeing is enjoyed as both a sport and a way to explore nature.
