Endurance Sports

Endurance sports are all about going the distance. Athletes push their bodies for hours or even days. These sports test how tough and determined a person can be.

Types of Endurance Sports

Ultramarathons are races that are longer than a regular marathon. Some are 50 miles, and others are over 100 miles! Long-distance cycling races can last for days. The Ironman triathlon combines a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all in one day.

Open-water swimming is another endurance sport. Some swimmers cross entire channels or lakes. These events push athletes to their limits.

Training for Endurance

Endurance athletes train for months or even years. They run, ride, or swim long distances every week. They also eat special diets to fuel their bodies. Rest and sleep are very important too.

Endurance sports teach people that they are stronger than they think. Finishing a long race is a huge accomplishment. Many people who do endurance sports say the hardest part is not giving up when it gets tough.
