High Jump

The high jump is a track and field event. Athletes run and jump over a thin bar set high in the air. They land on a big soft mat on the other side. The bar gets higher until only one jumper is left.

How They Jump

Most jumpers use a move called the Fosbury Flop. They run in a curve and then jump backward over the bar. Their back goes over first, and then their legs follow. This trick helps them jump higher than other ways.

The Bar

The bar is placed between two tall poles. It rests lightly so it falls if the jumper touches it. If the bar stays up, the jump counts. Jumpers get three tries to clear each height.

Fun Facts

  • The world record for the high jump is over 8 feet.
  • The Fosbury Flop is named after jumper Dick Fosbury.
  • Jumpers land on a thick foam mat for safety.

Did You Know?

Before 1968, most high jumpers went over the bar face-down instead of backward.
