Highland Games
Highland Games
Highland Games are traditional sporting events from Scotland. Athletes throw heavy stones, toss tall wooden poles, and compete in other feats of strength. Many competitors wear kilts, which are traditional Scottish clothing.
Events at the Games
The most famous event is the caber toss. A caber is a tall, heavy wooden pole that can be almost 20 feet long. Athletes pick it up and flip it end over end. The goal is to make it land in a straight line.
Other events include the stone put, where athletes throw a heavy stone as far as they can. The hammer throw uses a heavy ball on the end of a stick. There are also tug of war competitions and running races.
History and Traditions
Highland Games have been held in Scotland for hundreds of years. They started as a way for Scottish clans to show off their strongest warriors. Kings would watch the Games and pick the best fighters.
Today, Highland Games are held all over the world, not just in Scotland. The United States, Canada, Australia, and many other countries host their own Highland Games. Bagpipe music, dancing, and food are also part of the celebration.
