Rules and Referees

Every sport has rules that players must follow. Referees and umpires are the people who make sure everyone plays by the rules. They keep the game fair and safe for all players.

Why Rules Matter

Rules tell players what they can and cannot do. In soccer, you cannot touch the ball with your hands unless you are the goalie. In basketball, you cannot run without dribbling. Rules keep the game fair.

Without rules, games would be confusing and unfair. Imagine a soccer game where anyone could pick up the ball! Rules give every player the same chance to do their best.

What Referees Do

Referees watch the game closely. They blow a whistle or make a signal when someone breaks a rule. In some sports, they are called umpires or judges. They have a very hard job because they have to make quick decisions.

Referees train for many hours to learn all the rules. They have to be fair to both teams. Even if fans disagree with a call, referees do their best to get it right. Some sports even use video replay to help referees make the correct call.

Fun Facts

  • Football referees can run up to 7 miles during a single game.
  • The first sports referees appeared in boxing matches hundreds of years ago.
  • In tennis, a special computer system called Hawk-Eye helps check if the ball is in or out.

Did You Know?

Soccer referees carry different colored cards in their pockets. A yellow card is a warning, and a red card means a player has to leave the game!
