Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is Japan's national sport. Two big wrestlers face off in a round ring made of clay. Each one tries to push the other out or make them fall down. Sumo has been played for over 1,500 years. It is full of cool traditions and ceremonies.

The Rules

A sumo match begins when both wrestlers charge at each other. The first one to step outside the ring loses. A wrestler also loses if any part of their body besides the feet touches the ground. Matches are very short and can last only a few seconds. Wrestlers use pushes, throws, and grips to win.

Sumo Wrestlers

Sumo wrestlers are called rikishi. They eat a lot of food to get big and strong. Their special meal is a hot stew called chanko nabe. Top wrestlers live together in places called stables. They train every day and follow strict rules about how to dress and act.
