Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball is a fast-paced sport. Players zoom around the court in special sports wheelchairs. The rules are a lot like regular basketball, and the action is just as exciting.
How the Game Works
Two teams of five players face off on a regular basketball court. The hoop is the same height as in regular basketball. Players dribble by bouncing the ball while pushing their wheelchair. They can take two pushes before they have to dribble again.
Passing, shooting, and defense all happen just like in regular basketball. The team with the most points at the end wins. Games have four quarters, each lasting ten minutes.
History and Athletes
Wheelchair basketball started after World War II. Injured veterans wanted to keep playing sports. The first games were played in hospitals. Soon the sport grew, and teams formed all over the world.
Today, wheelchair basketball is one of the biggest Paralympic sports. Athletes train hard and play with great skill. It has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1960.
