Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing means using the internet to store and access your files. Your data is kept on big computers far away, not just on your device. You can reach your files from any device with internet. Many of the apps you use every day run in the cloud.
How the Cloud Works
When you save a photo to the cloud, it goes to a big data center. Data centers are buildings full of powerful computers called servers. These servers store your data safely. When you want your photo back, the server sends it to your device. It works like a giant invisible hard drive in the sky.
The Cloud in Your Life
You probably use the cloud more than you know. Google Docs saves your schoolwork in the cloud. Music apps stream songs from the cloud. Video games can save your progress in the cloud. If you lose your phone, your photos are safe in the cloud.
Fun Facts
- Some data centers are as big as several football fields.
- The cloud is not actually in the sky. It is a network of computers on the ground.
- Big companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft run the largest cloud services.
Did You Know?
The name "cloud computing" came from drawings of the internet. Engineers used to draw a cloud shape to represent the internet in their diagrams!
