My Neighbor Totoro
My Neighbor Totoro is a 1988 animated film directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. It follows two young sisters, Satsuki and Mei, who move to the countryside with their father. There they discover friendly forest spirits including the giant fluffy creature Totoro. The film celebrates the magic of childhood and the beauty of nature.
Meeting Totoro
Satsuki is ten years old and Mei is four. They move to be near the hospital where their mother is recovering from an illness. Mei discovers small spirits called Dust Bunnies in their new house. Later she finds Totoro, a giant soft creature who sleeps in a camphor tree in the forest.
A Magical World
Totoro can fly and make plants grow with magic. The Catbus is a cat-shaped bus that runs through the countryside. The film has no real villain. Instead it tells a gentle story about family, nature, and imagination. Totoro became the mascot of Studio Ghibli and is recognized worldwide.

Did You Know?
My Neighbor Totoro was released as a double feature with another Ghibli film called Grave of the Fireflies. The two films are very different in tone. Totoro is cheerful while Grave of the Fireflies is sad. Totoro did not make much money at first but became hugely popular through home video and merchandise!
